Trends in home design are ever changing and tile has been one of the largest categories of flooring that has grown and evolved. Tile has advanced in terms of aesthetics and is now viewed as more than just home flooring. It is a statement of interior design.
Today’s tile now follows the latest trends in layout patterns, color, shapes and finishes. The standard grid layout has been the most common layout used for flooring installations because it provides a clean balanced look to a room. For those who choose to have their flooring as a statement and bring a bit more personality, changing the direction of the tile is a great way to add a subtle enhancement to the room. With a variety of sizes and looks available, the possibilities are endless when looking to create a striking tile design or pattern.
Types of Tile
Ceramic Tile
Ceramic tile is composed of mixtures of clay, sand and other natural minerals that have been molded then baked or fired at a high temperature to set the tile in shape. Once baked or fired, the hardened clay body is generally treated with a glaze to add color and provide a bit of resistance to scratches. However, glazes are produced in various durability levels depending on the tiles end use. With that said, a glazed tile is only as durable and scratch resistant as the glaze on it, so be assured you are getting the highest quality available in ceramic tile.
Porcelain Tile
Porcelain tile is the most popular type of tile sold at J&J Carpet One for its supreme properties of high quality and versatility. Porcelain tiles are made from fine clays, quartz, and feldspar that have been fired at a higher temperature to produce a denser, more high quality tile. Since porcelain tile has a greater density than ceramic tile, the water absorption rating of less than 0.5% makes it more suitable for bathroom and shower floors, as well as outdoor and exterior settings such as porch areas and walkways. Porcelain tiles have a higher durability than ceramic tiles due to the construction of the tile as well as the manufacturing process. With that said, porcelain tile is a great alternative choice for a natural stone floor without the maintenance.
Stone Tile
Natural stone flooring brings high end, luxurious style to any room with an authentic look that makes it more desirable to some customers. Depending on the type of stone you select, the various types can complement any personal style and home décor, such as traditional, rustic, or contemporary. The most common types of natural stone floors used in homes are marble, travertine, and slate. Regardless of the type of stone, all natural stone flooring has a higher price point compared to porcelain and ceramic tile due to the installation process. The installation of stone tile is more labor intensive than any other tile and has to be sealed once installed; whereas porcelain and ceramic tiles are sealed during the manufacturing process.
Care & Maintenance of Tile Floors
Tile flooring is extremely durable; however, time, foot traffic, spills, pets, and general use are all factors that can dirty up your tile floors quicker than you think. Porcelain and ceramic tile will have the same cleaning requirements; however, natural stone flooring is more sensitive to cleaners and chemicals. Be sure to check the manufacturer’s suggestions on how to properly care for your tile floor so you uphold the necessary warranty requirements.
How to Care for Porcelain & Ceramic Floors
Porcelain and ceramic tile flooring are extremely easy to clean and care for. Tile flooring requires daily routine cleaning such as sweeping, vacuuming or dry mopping to remove sand and dirt. Be sure to mop your floors weekly, especially if you have pets, children, or a lot of foot traffic throughout your home. The easiest way to spot an unmaintained tile floor is by the grout color; therefore routine mopping will help keep the floors and grout clean. Avoid mopping with a solution, or diluted cleanser, for it will leave a film on the surface of the tile and trap more dirt. The best way to deep clean and disinfect tile floors is with a steam mop. Steam mops are safe to use with pets and kids as there are no chemical cleaning solutions… and the best part is that they don’t require any tough scrubbing!
How to Care for Stone Tile Floors
Natural stone tile floors require the same periodical cleaning as porcelain and ceramic tile but are slightly more delicate when it comes to cleaning with a solution. Certain liquid cleaners should not be used on a stone floor because it will react wrongly with the sealer, such as bleach. Instead you must use a solution with a neutral PH when cleaning with a wet mop.
